The Inspiration for Nalanda West

Nalanda West has three primary goals:  1) to provide a Western context for exploration of the mind and emotions, through educational and practical seminars, including a multi-year study curriculum, utilizing the wisdom of the buddhist teachings of the science of mind;; 2) to provide instruction on focusing and training the mind, emotions and ordinary awareness through multi-year meditation curriculum and meditation retreats; 3) to provide opportunities for integrating buddhist insights into the context of family and the career activities of daily life.

The Dzogchen Ponlop RinpocheThe Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, the head of Nalanda West, explains that the buddhist gateway "is not about religion per se. Rather, it is a genuine science of mind that uncovers the very nature of the mind and the phenomena that we experience. It is also a genuine philosophy of life – an approach to life that deals with its meaning . . .The teachings of this tradition show us the pure reality of both our own mind and our environment.”

Nalanda West is a dynamic learning center for inquisitive minds.  People who are curious about the integration of contemplative inquiry with contemporary culture, business and art journey to and teach at Nalanda West. We provide a place for Eastern ideas to meet Western investigation and offer unprecedented opportunities for trans-cultural dialogue, debate, and authentic awakening to overcome the suffering of the world. Nalanda West was established for those who wish to make their own journey of exploration into the nature of mind and true nature of reality, the buddhist paradigm of enlightenment.

Khenpo RinpocheThe spiritual advisor for Nalanda West, Khenchen Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, elaborates using some of the terminology of the science of mind: “This appearance-emptiness palace of Mahamudra, Dzogchen and the Middle Way is so delightful.  It is so peaceful and beautiful and easy.  It is supremely excellent.  It is open, spacious and relaxed . . . . Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, as a result of his enlightened love and compassion, has founded this center which will be of great benefit to Mahayana practitioners not only of Seattle, not only of America, but of the entire world.” To learn more, come explore Nalanda West with us.
