Programs at Nalanda WestNalanda West programs provide a multitude of opportunities to explore our lives through study and insight into the nature of our mind and the world we inhabit. Such exploration is central to our aspiration to enrich our experience of living in our modern day society. Our approach is also about developing a genuine philosophy of life – an approach to life that deals with its meaning, helps us enjoy the moment and appreciate our experience, whether of happiness or suffering. Our calendar of programs is available by clicking here. Nalanda West is a place for big questions and simple questions, for reflection and openness, for sitting still and contemplative movement. Programming includes regular teachings by Nalanda West’s resident teachers, meditation sessions, curriculum classes, yoga, group practices for members of the community, and timely seminars on topics of interest. To facilitate each person's individual exploration of ourselves and our environment, Nalanda West draws on the accumulated wisdom developed in the Buddhist tradition. The teachings of this tradition show us the pure reality of both our own mind and our environment. Such an inquiry is hence not for a religious goal or limited to Buddhists. At Nalanda West, Buddhist spirituality is not understood as a religion per se. Rather, it is presented as a genuine science of mind that uncovers the very nature of the mind and the phenomena that we experience. Nalanda West is a gateway to the buddhist sciences of mind for individuals to draw upon as they wish.
Visiting teachers and members of the community present and participate in a regular schedule of activities, including trainings in philosophy and logic, meditation retreats, workshops, arts presentations, poetry readings, performances, and special topic seminars, such as Mudra and Maitri space awareness. World renowned meditation masters, such as Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, annually visit our facility. Our late summer conference, “Spiritual Perspectives on Dying Well, Caregiving and Healing Grief,” includes Buddhist, Christian, Jewish and Sufi speakers (click here for more information on this conference). We are planning a conference on Psychology and the Arts for Spring 2007. Topics will include investigation into the wisdom of emotions and creativity, skillfully handling personal and professional relationships, and therapeutic arts.
